Hey guys,

I was going to post this in the staff area. However, most of you still around, whether staff members or not, have been here for a long time and have made valuable contributions to Into Narnia. You all deserve to know what's going on, and give your input if you'd like.

As you know, keeping up IN has been a struggle. We've been around for two years, which is pretty incredible, but our plot has really not gone far in that period of time. We've had quite a few struggles with inactivity, especially with canons (we had at least two other Peters before the wonderful Julie took him on, and four Edmunds before Liz).  Further, Jordan, who created the site, hasn't exactly been around in a long time.  As the recent spurt of spam shows, there is a lot the rest of us can't really do without her. 

Cara and I were discussing this the other day, and we've decided that things can't continue as they are. So we've come up with two options. First, we could move IN to another site, and start a second version. The benefits of this solution would be that we would have complete control of the site, and wouldn't have to rely on Jordan. We could also freshen things up, so maybe we'd be more attractive to newcomers.  The downside, of course, is that we become disconnected with everything we've built up here, and while we'll try to make the transition as smooth as possible, it would still in some sense be like starting completely anew.

Another problem with that first solution is time. All of us, but particularly the staff members, have very little of it. Cara's working two jobs. I'm studying abroad, and while I'll be back in May, and have most of that month free, after that I'm not sure I'll have a spare minute until October, if then. The others have been busy as well. If we run a site, we want to run it well, and that takes time I'm not sure we have. And starting anew would take even more time at the start, though at least I could put a lot of effort into it in May.

Therefore, as much as Cara and I hate the idea, our other option is to say goodbye to IN completely. We love this site, but can we really make it thrive with so little time on our hands?

Anyway, that's what's going on. The staff will be the ones determining what to do next, but we'd love to hear your input and comments as we make this difficult decision.

Wow... I can honestly say that I can't imagine leaving IN. I've grown to love and adore it with a fierce passion as well as all the wonderful people who role play here. If that does end up happening, I'm sure we'll all understand completely. I'm not about to sit here and give guilt trips because I know from my own experiences how hard it is to keep a role play site going. However, should you decide to move to another site, I'll do all I can to help. ^_^ And I might just know a computer whiz who could perhaps tell me how to transfer things like threads and the content therein... >.> At least I'm pretty sure he can do that.

I would hate to see it go, truly. But unless we have an active staff, and active members, it just can't work. I would normally say "let's just start over and see how it goes" but because I know how little time especially Misha and I have, and the perhaps low chances of things working out... well, I don't know if it would be worth the time and effort. Not that I don't love IN.

As for a switch over, we could take the threads are the most important, and take some time to transfer them over. Like the plot threads and whatnot. If we used SMF, you can choose the ID of the poster/change it, so we could certainly attribute everyone's posts to them. Or if we used invisionfree, we could take forever but have access to all the accounts before anyone's allowed to use them and post their threads all at once. We could not post the threads that are unimportant or have inactive characters/etc.

It's possible, but I don't want to try it unless we know we have the interest and the people who can dedicate the time. Because I can't do it on my own, Misha can't do it on her own, and we don't expect anyone to try either.

I'm all for moving the site somewhere else.  We would be able to run the site ourselves, and get an active Susan, for example.  We also would, it appears, have no problems getting other members, since we're all willing to go with the site if it moves.  The next month for me is going to be filled with craziness, but during the summer, I'll have lots of time so I'll do whatever needs doing.  But after summer, well, I don't really know.  I've been doing my best to stay active, I know we all have.  But a lack of time is something that can't really be remedied.  Obviously as the newest staff member, I default to you guys, and I support you wholeheartedly, whatever your decision.  I love this site and would be willing to work in order to keep it going, as I'm sure we all would, but if that isn't feasible, well, it was certainly fun while it lasted.

I would be for those of us still here (this is not me volunteering people, just an idea and me volunteering myself) being staff at a new site cause it's not fair you guys having to take the brunt of it.

I like the idea of moving to another site to start fresh (maybe an invisionfree site, which tends to get a lot less spambot crap), though I'm not so sure I like the idea of leaving all of the plots behind as well.

We can take the plots with us, I'm pretty sure. It'd take time, but we could do it.

That would be good.... the plot is the main thing I'm worried about, since I really like where it's gotten the site thusfar. I think it would be easier, though, to change sites for the sake of getting away from all those spambots, and maybe bringing in new members (I know that when I see a new board, I'm more apt to join than one that's been around forever)

Yes, if we moved to another site, we'd take our plots with us, and even the important threads if possible.

Liz, your offer of help is greatly appreciated, and we'll probably take you up on it if we do move! And Julie, it's good to know you'll have time in the summer. Because frankly, if we move, I'm going to be dropping most of my charries (even Lucy, if an existing member wants her) and may be doing barely any admin work after May. Obviously, it's tough to know how much time anyone will have in the future, including myself, so I may end up with more spare time than I think, but it's more likely I'll end up with less. (I'm doing this intense teacher training boot camp thing in the summer, and then starting teaching my own class in the fall.)

Depending what kind of site we move to, I'd be more than happy to help as well; I'd like to think I'm decently savvy at admin-ing InvisionFree boards.

I'm probably going to be working part-time this summer, so I would be fairly available to do stuff if the admins/mods needed some extra manpower

Hey, guys! I only made it 1/2 way through this thread. I just have to say that I'm not one of those people who says she's busy and never comes back. I am 100% sure I will come back with renewed vigour come June. Maybe before then. (Sure I've still got 50 pages of writing and 500 pages of reading in the next 1.5 weeks, then a road trip and moving and job search and who knows where I'll be living or what I'll be doing. . .) BUT BUT BUT I will be happy to help with a new site. I don't want to lose this one, certainly! Like Misha, I'm not 100% sure I should be given much administrative work (it all depends on the sort of job I have, really. I might have a boring desk job that allows me to RP 8 hours a day!) but I want to be involved in any way possible.

Do we know if Jordan pays to keep the web domain? If not, we can keep the site open and link back to it; thus sort of keeping an external "archives" for reference. But I think a start-over might do us some good. I think we can revamp the plot and really recruit. People like to be integral to plots, so I think considering the core of excellent and dedicated RPers we have and possibly in addition to the awesome ones we may get, we can have something awesome going on.

I'll have a bit more time come June, though. Almost there!

So; my situation is LOOKING UP!

Currently I'm working part time at Claire's, and part time as a nanny. HOWEVER, on Friday I'm interviewing for an ASSISTANT MANAGER position at a different Claire's location, and it would begin on June 19th. IF I get it (and I like to think I have a decent shot at it!) I'll be quitting my nannying job, hands down. Which would mean that I'd have no more 6am mornings, so I could actually do things in the evenings, like post and whatnot.

I don't want to lose IN; I'd say I'm in favor of keeping it, though I might go down to just two characters. (Probably Caspian and Corinna, because I like Corinna and want to get to actually play her more. xD)

For those who are interested in keeping the site (Well, moving it), what server would you guys like? Invisionfree? Proboards? (I personally love Invision, hate Proboards) Or something different?

I will say that there are lots of features of SMF I will miss (esp. the Switch Accounts one, but others as well), but I've never hosted my own site before and just think it would be much more complicated than IF and the others.

IPBfree and Invisionfree are very similar. I'm slightly more familiar with Invisionfree, but I do know IPBfree has a few more features.

ETA: I think it looks like we have enough people interested in the idea and committed to IN to at least try moving the site? Any staff member disagree?

Out of curiosity, though; would we reboot the plot, or carry at least some of it over to the new site? Cuz personally, I really like where some of the smaller plots are going/went.

Quick log-in's not quite as easy, though! And there's also no easy way to change the poster of a topic/reply or have our special sekret (useful) staff sidebar or, or...[/whining]

Yes, we'd definitely keep any plots you still want to keep. We'll definitely be making some changes, since this is as good a time as any to do so, but IN will still be IN, plots and all.

Anyway, I had a few extra hours last night, and may or may not have spent them playing with Invisionfree. You can see the results here, but know that nothing is quite set in stone yet, even whether or not we'll be using IF in the end.

I'm not sure if I'll have more than a few minutes of internet access here and there in the next week, but after that, I'll be home, and can start working on things in earnest! We'll probably draw up a list of what needs to be done, so we can conscript all of you to help.

Aww...thanks guys. I totally just took a skin and copied the colors/banner from an LJ comm I (supposedly) run and the images from this site. Still lots to do, of course.
