Character Basics
Full Name: Alderan Haquin Séguier
Alias(es)/Nickname(s): Sir (by his men), My Lord (by the peasants), Daddy (by his kids)
Gender: Male
Age: 42
Species: Human
Status/Title: Marquess of Devereaux; Commander of the Devereaux Cavalry unit

Character Appearance
Hair: Salt-and-pepper; naturally brown, but going gray
Eyes: Blue
Overall:
At age 42, Alderan's age is very much apparent both in the lines of his suntanned face and the gray beginning to show in his otherwise dark hair; even still, he stands at an imposing 6 feet 2 inches tall, muscular in build and strong in stature. His hair is kept short-cropped, with a beard on his face kept neatly trimmed; decked in his battle attire, Alderan appears serious and dangerous, and rightfully so. Being skilled in warfare, both in swordplay and archery, Alderan's sword very rarely leaves his side and can be seen at his hip at all times at the Telmarine camp. However, despite his otherwise intimidating facade, Alderan is still human and has been known to joke and laugh with his men during times of rest and recuperation; the smile is a rarity, though, as it is only those Alderan is close to who get to see it. He sports a number of scars on his person, though most of them are obscured by his clothing, most of them having from from previous experiences in sparring and jousting.

General Personality:
As a noble of Telmar, Alderan lives up fairly well to the expectation that he be professional, polite and politically savvy, though he has been known not to be afraid to voice his opinion whenever his morals come into play concerning some matters. Though this has gotten him in the bad graces of other lords a handful of times, ultimately Alderan's experience has kept him from coming off as ignorant. Concerning his land and the peasants who toil on it, Alderan is a generous but strict lord, expecting his people to respect and obey him and his rules, and rewarding it appropriately. Just as he would on the battlefield, he has very little patience or tolerance for insubordination, and will not hesitate to stand up to it. For the most part, Alderan makes his living as a military man, but on the side uses his land for farming crops and raising livestock, particularly horses since he leads a cavalry unit during wartime.

As a family man, one might not even recognize the Lord of Devereaux. Alderan is a warm, doting husband and father, and is very close to his wife and two children. Rather than having a tutor teach his son how to fight, Alderan has taken it upon himself to use his available time to teach Orland the arts of horseback riding, archery and swordplay; his daughter Celestine (who is still too young to begin schooling and plays with many of the local children), he is especially protective of and does not take kindly to other children (especially boys) that might tease her. Alderan's wife, Marchioness Elaisse, he considers to be the love of his life, and has proven to be something of a romantic by showering her with affection and gifts. Alderan's family is, without a doubt, both his biggest strength and weakness; they are his motivation to go to war, but he would also surrender for their safety.

And, last but certainly not least, Alderan as a military officer; being the leader of a cavalry unit, he of course has become very skilled in horseback riding as well as archery and swordplay (on foot or mounted). Much like how he handles his land and people, Alderan demands respect and that his orders be obeyed without question; he is even less patient with disrespect on the battlefield, though most of Alderan's men have known him long enough that conflict is rare within his unit. Alderan lives on a philosophy that being structured and strict but treating his men like people will earn him the best results, and has no complaints having come to be considered a kind of father figure to his men.

If asked, Alderan would tell you that he believes his motivation for defending his country is probably stronger than the average soldier, despite having more or less been ordered into the war like everyone else; he operates on the mindset that, for one, Miraz would not be organizing the army if Caspian's resistance was as insignificant as many seem to think it. Secondly, his love of his family and people has given Alderan the drive to do just about anything that will keep them safe, especially his family. He does not, however, believe in the notion of Old Narnians, thinking them to be merely fantasy used by Caspian and Miraz as a scare tactic.

On a personal level, Alderan is not without his quirks and tastes. He is particularly fond of apples and horses, loves having free time to spend playing with his children, and is a frequent participant in playing practical jokes with and on the men of his unit, though he dislikes being the one on the receiving end. One of his most-guarded secrets and weaknesses is Alderan's inability to swim, not that he's ever told anyone other than his wife...

Character History
Family:
- Marchioness Elaisse Fiennes-Séguier (wife- 40)
- Orland Séguier (son- 12)
- Celestine Séguier (daughter- 7)
-----
- Marquess Lienart Séguier (father- deceased)
- Marchioness Orella Achard-Séguier (mother- retired)

General History:
Though Alderan's birth didn't occur under any unusual circumstances, the fact that he was his parents' only son could probably be counted for something. At his age, though, Alderan has almost no memory of his life earlier than the age of 7 or 8, save for perhaps the first time he ever rode a horse (and was promptly bucked off). As a son of a Marquess, he was brought up on a sturdy education focusing mostly on politics, though Alderan was also well-rounded in other subjects as well and is rather fond of astronomy. Since his title also automatically put him as an officer come wartime, he was also taught strategy, hand-to-hand combat, swordplay and archery among other things. Horseback riding was more or less a necessity, and Alderan picked it up the quickest of any of the other parts of his education, true to form as the son of a Marquess whose family was known for its prized horses. Long before his knowing, though, Alderan's parents would arrange with the Lord and Lady Fiennes to see their son and daughter (respectively) marry one day.

Alderan wouldn't come to find out about this arrangement until he was about 18, putting Elaisse at 16 when their parents announced that they were to be betrothed; needless to say Elaisse was less than happy with the arrangement despite that they were not actually to be wed until she had turned 18. Still smitten with the young lady, though, Alderan attempted  --albeit awkwardly from lack of experience-- to court Elaisse, initially finding himself with a shy bride-to-be that was embarrassed by his inexperienced, clumsy advances. For the most part, this would change very little for the first couple of years even into their marriage, though as Alderan adjusted to his new role as a husband and heir to his aging father's title, he continued to try and make time for his new wife. He would later maintain that that would be the real start of what would eventually become a happy and loving marriage, though Elaisse's answer might differ.

Besides juggling his role as a new husband and his duties as the son of a marquess, Alderan was also getting acquainted with many of the people who lived and worked in the Devereaux earldom... in particular, the men who served as his father's cavalry. Most if not all of them were older than he and far more experienced, though a number of the older men would take the young man under their collective wing and teach him some of the finer points of their duties learned through experience; by this time, he was about 21 years old, and could hardly have expected the next major event in his life.

Lord Lienart would come to pass when Alderan was still only 23 years old, having sustained a terrible injury during a jousting tournament and succumbing to it when the wound became infected; at first, Alderan struggled to uphold his new title as the Marquess of Devereaux and cope with the grief of his father's death. A number of the cavalrymen whom he had come to consider good friends were especially generous in helping the young lord back up to his feet again. In time, though, he did manage to rise to the occasion and fill the shoes left for him by his father, all the while taking care of both his widowed mother and wife.

By this time, Alderan's nearly tireless efforts to win Elaisse's heart had paid off, and the two were very close despite his wife's initial misgivings about him and their arranged marriage; however, it wouldn't be until Alderan was 30 and Elaisse 28 that their first child would be born (about 10 years after having married), a son named Orland. Alderan was immediately smitten with the child and would make a point of spending time with his son regularly, especially after the boy had begun to walk, and even more so when he was old enough to begin learning to ride horses. Celestine would come some 5 years after her brother, born a bit earlier than anticipated but a very welcome arrival nonetheless; Alderan would be especially protective of his daughter as she grew older and would begin to play with other children her age, and has earned himself a bit of a reputation for scaring off little boys that might tease his baby girl.

It would not be past his notice the unusual circumstances surrounding the death of King Caspian IX and Miraz coming to power, and after a handful of lords seemingly 'disappeared' was all the cue Alderan needed to know that voicing his doubts would likely earn him a similar fate. However, he goes on the logic that Miraz would not be organizing for war if Prince Caspian X posed as little threat as rumor among the lords seemed to claim, and as such has mobilized his own forces upon request, both out of obligation as well as being fueled by the desire to protect his family and his father's land. He has earned himself a warning look on a couple of occasions for voicing his protests against orders he believed would bring about unnecessary bloodshed. Alderan doesn't, however, believe in the notion that Caspian was organizing a resistance of Old Narnians, thinking them only fantasy and being used as a scare tactic by both sides either to recruit more soldiers or scare them off.

Other/Notes:
Not the best app I've ever written, but he seems to be talking to me in post format already. (lol)

Wonderful app, as always, Kai!  Just one little thing, and I'm only mentioning it because I had to look up the answer myself: a marquess rules a marquessate and not an earldom, ¿sí?

At any rate, this app is definitely

Accepted!
